What are the Levels of Cognitive Demand?
Cognitive Demand is the level of thinking required of students in order to successfully engage with and solve the task. There are two levels of cognitive demand. There is Low Level Cognitive Demands, which include Memorization tasks and Procedures Without Connections. The second level, is High Cognitive Demand, which includes Procedures with Connections and Doing Mathematics. With Procedures Without Connections students are not required to connect the math problems to understanding, meaning, or the concept of the task. With Procedures With Connections the students are connecting the math problems to understanding, the meaning of the problem, and the concept of the math problem. Below is a chart that explains each individual Cognitive Demand Level.
